Gardening is one of my passions. Some of my best memories of growing up have to do gardening. Like the time my parents went to get a truck load of cow manure from friends and put it all directly on the garden. That year, marigolds were about the only thing that grew, but they were beautiful. From shucking corn on the back porch to gathering tomatoes from the vines, gardening was pure joy. Now, it’s one of my favorite things to do with my children. And I love to share my organic gardening journey with others like you.
no dig, raised bed, container Gardening
Because we live in the Ozarks of Missouri, in ground gardening is just not an option. And so we have become quite familiar with no dig, raised bed and container gardening methods. For most of our early years of gardening we used whatever free or cheap wood we could get to create raised beds. Now we also have some more expensive beds, but the most important gardening technique for us has been no dig.
Organic Gardening On a Budget
Over the past several years of building our off grid home and homestead from scratch, debt free, we have learned to re-use, use it up, make it do, or do without. When you don’t have extra finances floating around on a regular basis . . . or ever, the opportunities for creativity are endless.
organic gardening With Flowers
You probably remember me saying that gardening is my passion. I have a confession. Flowers are actually my real passion. Honestly, without flowers, I don’t think I would care much about gardening. And I don’t know how anyone could be a successful organic gardener without them. All gardens must have flowers, in my opinion. Wouldn’t you agree?
Organic Gardening With Herbs
Herbs in the garden are like salt on a fried egg. Just like all gardens need flowers, they all need herbs as well. And the bonus that comes with herbs is that many of them have beautiful blooms. Those beautiful blooms bring in all kinds of good bugs for the garden, and they are lovely to add to bouquets as well. Besides their beauty and benefit to the garden, herbs also have amazing health benefits.
Food in season from the garden
Fresh food, in season, is some of the most nutrient rich food you can eat. We love to keep as many things growing year round as possible so that we always have something fresh from the garden to add to our meals. Farm to table meals have become a welcome challenge as we learn to eat more and more from the land that we have been given to steward.
Organic Gardening Structure
Without a doubt, gardens need structure. From arbors, trellises, and pergolas, to pathways, fences, and gates. They all play an important role in the inner workings of the organic garden.
Gardening in small spaces Or with small people
Who doesn’t enjoy a miniature garden or a garden in a tiny space. From pots, to patios, to tiny imaginary worlds, gardening in small spaces is sure to get creative and fun.
Healthy Organic Soil
The health of the soil in the garden is everything. Without healthy soil, you can’t grow healthy food. There are a few flowers that thrive in poor soil, but they are the exception. We like to keep it simple in our gardens when it comes to healthy soil with good compost, comfrey tea, and a diversity of roots in the ground at all times.
